Admin access comes from roles. Each role is a set of permissions, and a person gets every permission from every role they hold. If the role you need doesn't exist yet, [create it first](/en/help/company-admin/roles-and-permissions/create-an-admin-role/).

## Assign roles

1. Go to **Admin → Roles and permissions**. The **Employees** tab lists everyone who has an admin role.
2. Select **Assign roles**.

3. Under **Employees**, search by name or work email and pick one or more people. Type at least 2 characters to search.
4. Under **Admin roles**, select one or more roles. Every person you picked gets all of them.
5. Check the summary on the right, then select **Assign roles**.

Assigning only adds roles. Roles the people already have stay as they are; the summary says "Existing admin roles will not be removed."

Once you've saved, the people can open the admin dashboard from their profile menu and see what their roles allow. A role whose only permission is **Award points** doesn't open the dashboard. It's for people who award points from a budget they've been given.

## Change someone's roles

1. On the **Employees** tab, open the actions menu in the person's row and choose **Change roles**.
2. Select the roles they should have after saving. Any role you clear is listed under **Roles to remove**.
3. Select **Save changes**. It stays greyed out until you change something.

You can only change one person at a time this way. To give the same roles to several people, use **Assign roles**.

## Remove all of someone's roles

On the **Employees** tab, open the actions menu in the person's row and choose **Remove all admin roles**. Confirm with **Remove all admin roles**. To remove only some roles, use **Change roles** instead. You can assign roles again later.

## Before you save

- **Changing your own roles.** You can, but if you remove the permission that lets you assign roles, you can't give it back to yourself. The form warns you when you're editing your own roles.
- **HR report access.** Saving can also add or remove HR report access that isn't shown on this page. The form says this is a known issue. Ask support to check the person's report access afterwards.
- **Super admin isn't a role here.** You can't make someone a super admin on this page. See [Admin access and permissions](/en/help/company-admin/roles-and-permissions/admin-access-and-permissions/).

## If something goes wrong

- **"No active roles exist. Create a role first."** There's nothing to assign yet. [Create a role](/en/help/company-admin/roles-and-permissions/create-an-admin-role/), then come back.
- **"Inactive role still grants access"** in **Change roles**: the person holds a role that has been deactivated, and saving is blocked. Use **Remove all admin roles** for that person, then assign the roles they should keep.
- **"Duplicate assignment data was found"** or **"This employee has a role name that is not unique"**: saving is blocked for this person. Contact support before you change their roles.
- **"You don't have permission to assign admin roles"**: you need a super admin, or a role with **Assign admin roles**. Ask a super admin for access.
