# Add your own questions

> Go to Pulse → Questions → Add question, write the question, choose how employees answer and which survey type it's for, then select Add question. You need Pulse Pro.

- Product: Pulse › Questions, templates and emails
- Who can do this: Super admins, HR admins, Reporting managers (view only)
- Plan: Pulse. Pulse Pro for adding questions
- Where: Admin dashboard
- Last checked: 15 Oct 2026
- Web page: https://www.vantagecircle.com/en/help/pulse/questions-templates-and-emails/add-your-own-questions/

Go to **Pulse → Questions** and select **Add question**. Questions you add belong to your company. They sit in the same library as the Vantage Circle questions, grouped by topic, and the **Source** column says **Company** or **Vantage Circle**.

## Before you start

- You need Pulse Pro. On Pulse Lite, **Add question** has a **Pro** tag and opens an upgrade box instead.
- Check your wording first. Once a question is added, you can't edit or delete it.
- To add translations at the same time, your survey languages must be set in **Pulse → Settings**. See [Pulse settings](/en/help/pulse/pulse-settings-and-access/pulse-settings/).

## Steps

1. Under **Question**, write one question of up to 150 characters. The screen's own advice is a good test: "Ask one thing at a time. Avoid wording that leads employees toward an answer."
2. Choose a **Response type**:
   - **Rating scale**, a 1–5 agreement scale from "Not at all" to "Absolutely".
   - **Written response**, where employees type their own answer.
   - **Multiple choice**, where employees pick one answer. Add 2 to 10 **Answer options** of up to 100 characters each. Each option must be different.
3. Under **Available for**, choose the survey type whose templates can use this question.
4. Choose a **Topic**. Questions are grouped by topic in the library and in results.
5. If you want translations now, pick languages under **Translation languages** and select **Generate translations**. Review each one in the panel on the right before you save. You can also add them later. See [Translate questions](/en/help/pulse/questions-templates-and-emails/translate-questions/).
6. Check the **Question preview** on the right, then select **Add question**.

If you pick more than one survey type under **Available for**, the question ends up filed under only one of them. Check the **Available for** column after you add it.

## What happens next

You'll see **Question added**, and the library opens on the question's topic. Admins can now pick the question when they build a template or a survey of that survey type.

Rating scale answers count towards the engagement score like any other rating question. Written and multiple-choice answers don't. See [How the engagement score is calculated](/en/help/pulse/read-results/how-the-engagement-score-is-calculated/).

## Fix a mistake

Open the row's menu and choose **Duplicate and fix**. It copies the question into a new **Add question** form for you to correct. Then [turn the old question off](/en/help/pulse/questions-templates-and-emails/turn-a-question-on-or-off/).

## If something goes wrong

**"Question added without survey types"**
The question was saved, but not under the survey type you chose. New questions start under the Pulse survey type. To move it, edit the survey type you want in **Pulse → Survey types** and add the question to its available questions. See [Create a survey type](/en/help/pulse/questions-templates-and-emails/create-a-survey-type/).

**"The question could not be added. Try again."**
Nothing was saved. Try again in a moment.

**"You can view the question library, but you cannot change it."**
Reporting managers can look at the library but can't add or change questions. Ask an HR admin or a super admin.

**"You don't have access to the question library"**
Your role isn't allowed to create surveys, so the server turned the question down. Ask a super admin to check your permissions.
