# Turn a question on or off

> Use the Status switch on Pulse → Questions. Turning a question off hides it from the question library you pick survey type questions from, but doesn't change surveys, templates or survey types that already use it.

- Product: Pulse › Questions, templates and emails
- Who can do this: Super admins, HR admins, Reporting managers (view only)
- Plan: Pulse
- Where: Admin dashboard
- Last checked: 15 Oct 2026
- Web page: https://www.vantagecircle.com/en/help/pulse/questions-templates-and-emails/turn-a-question-on-or-off/

Each question on **Pulse → Questions** has a switch in the **Status** column. Turning a question off asks you to confirm with "Deactivate this question?". Turning it back on happens straight away.

An inactive question stays in the list, dimmed. Use the **Status** filter and choose **Inactive** to find them all.

## What turning a question off changes

It no longer appears in the **Question library** when you choose a survey type's available questions.

It doesn't change:

- surveys that have already started;
- templates that already include it;
- survey types that already include it. The confirmation says so: "Survey types may still include this question."

So if admins can still pick the question in a template or in **Create survey**, it's because a survey type still offers it. Remove it from that survey type's available questions. See [Create a survey type](/en/help/pulse/questions-templates-and-emails/create-a-survey-type/).

Vantage Circle questions can't be removed from a survey type. To keep one out of your surveys, leave it out when you build the template or the survey.

## If something goes wrong

**The switch is greyed out**
Reporting managers can view the library but can't change it. The page says "You can view the question library, but you cannot change it."

**A message appears above the list after you switch**
The change wasn't saved, and the message says why. The rest of the list is still up to date. Try the switch again.
