# How reward points work

> Employees get reward points from awards, bulk uploads and celebrations, and redeem them in the Rewards Hub. Points belong to one country, and at some companies they expire.

Reward points are what employees receive when they're recognised, and what they spend in the Rewards Hub on gift cards and other rewards.

## Where points come from

- Awards: when a nomination is approved, the employee gets the award's points. If your company uses budgets, they come out of a budget holder's budget. Budgets are set up in **Rewards Hub → Budgets**. See [Budgets](/en/help/rewards-hub/budgets/).
- Bulk uploads: an admin uploads a CSV file of employees and points, and an approver releases it. See [Give points to many employees with a CSV file](/en/help/rewards-hub/points-and-transactions/give-points-with-a-csv-file/). Uploads come out of the company wallet, so they work even if your company doesn't use budgets.
- Celebrations: some companies give points automatically for work anniversaries and birthdays.

Employees see their balance and redeem it in the Rewards Hub. To point your people to help, see [Your points](/en/help/rewards-hub/your-points/) and [Redeem your points](/en/help/rewards-hub/redeem-your-points/).

## Points belong to a country

Each country has its own company wallet, and a point is worth a different amount in each country's currency. So the Rewards Hub never adds points from two countries together. On analytics pages and in the **Statement**, you choose one country at a time.

When an award is given in several countries, the points can differ by country after your company's cost-of-living adjustments. The award form's **Preview point amounts by country** shows this.

## Points expiry

Points only expire if Vantage Circle has turned expiry on for your company. There's no setting for it in the admin dashboard.

If it's on:

- Points from bulk uploads and celebrations get an expiry date when they're given. Each grant has its own date. It's usually 12 months later, but the length is set per company.
- Points still unspent from a grant after its expiry date are removed from the employee's balance.
- The email employees get with uploaded points mentions the expiry date.
- Employees get a reminder email about 30 days before points expire, if at least 250 of them are still unspent.

You can see how many points expired in **Rewards Hub → Overview**, on the **Expired** line of the wallet balance. Companies that don't use budgets also get a **Points expired in the period** tile. See [Rewards Hub overview](/en/help/rewards-hub/emails-and-reports/rewards-hub-overview/).

This is about employees' points. Manage budget holders' balances in **Rewards Hub → Budgets**.
