How recognition reach is calculated

Recognition reach is the number of employees who received at least one approved recognition in a period, divided by everyone on the payroll at any point in that period.

Recognition reach is the share of employees who received at least one recognition in a period. It’s the main number on Recognition → Overview and the first highlight on Recognition → Analytics.

Who counts as recognised

An employee counts once they’ve received one approved recognition of any kind in the period: an appreciation, an award, a panel award, a service milestone award, a greeting or a boost. Being recognised ten times still counts once.

Pending, rejected and cancelled nominations don’t count. An award counts in the period it was approved in, so a nomination approved weeks later can move a past quarter’s figure a little.

Who is in the base

The base is everyone on the payroll at any point in the period, including people who joined or left part way through. It isn’t the number of people who signed in. Overview shows it as Employees in period.

Someone who was recognised and then left counts on both sides, so reach can’t go above 100%.

An example

Acme Corp’s Sales team in India had 140 people on the payroll at some point in the last 90 days. 98 of them received at least one recognition. Reach for that team is 98 ÷ 140 = 70%.

Narrowing Recognition → Analytics by country or department narrows both numbers together. The same goes for the bars in Reach by department and Participation by country.

Why the quarters don’t add up to the year

Reach counts people, not recognitions. Someone recognised once in March and once in August counts in two quarters, but only once in the year. So the year’s reach is usually higher than any single quarter’s, and it isn’t their average.

That’s why the charts show reach by calendar quarter, not by month.

The change and the goal

The change pill on Overview compares reach with the period of the same length just before. It’s shown in percentage points: 62% to 66% is “4.0 pp” up.

The goal is 70% unless a super admin changes it in Recognition → Settings, under North star goal. It’s a whole number from 1 to 100. Overview, Analytics and Home all use the same goal. When you filter Analytics by recognition type, the goal is hidden, because it’s set for all types together.

Timing

The figures are rebuilt overnight. Every period ends yesterday at the latest, so recognitions from today count from tomorrow.

When reach isn’t shown

  • No eligible employees in the period: Overview shows “No recognition data is available for this period.”
  • Reach above 100%: some recognitions don’t match an employee record. Overview shows “Recognition reach could not be verified for this period.” and Analytics hides the reach charts.

Average points per recognition

Avg points / recognition on Analytics is the total reward points on awards and milestone awards in the period, divided by how many there were. Appreciations and greetings carry no points, so they’re left out rather than counted as zero.
