Recognition That Does not Just Reward Work – It Rewards the Whole Human

Recognition is not about how much you spend; it’s about how deeply you see.
A few years ago, when I was part of one of my earlier organizations, we were deep into a project that seemed endless. Deadlines stretched like rubber bands, meetings piled up, and every spreadsheet looked like someone’s revenge against happiness.
One afternoon, after another marathon call, I walked into the office to find Mansi—one of our most dedicated but quietly working team members—at her desk with a mountain of paperwork and her favorite cup of tea, untouched. She looked exhausted but determined.
I asked, “Mansi, when was the last time you took a break?”
She smiled and said, “Break? Oh, I’ll take one after this.”
That “after this” never came that day.
Later, a few of us sat together and asked: How many Mansis are working tirelessly but never being recognized? We already had awards for big wins, but what about the small, everyday efforts that kept the wheels turning? How often do you see people—even your boss—pushing lunch from 1 PM to 3 or 4 PM, or skipping it altogether just to prioritise other priorities ?
That’s when we introduced “Tea Time Thanks.”
Every Friday, one person would be randomly chosen—not for performance metrics—but for those quiet contributions that made work easier or lighter. The chosen colleague would receive a handwritten note and their favorite cup of tea delivered by a teammate.
The first week, Mansi got the surprise. She burst out laughing when the tea arrived. “You remembered I like cardamom tea!” she exclaimed.
A small gesture, seen at the right time, creates ripples bigger than budgets ever could.
It was not about budgets or glitzy ceremonies—it was about noticing the human behind the role.
Soon, people started coming up with their own recognition ideas – Desk Drop Thank You notes, Lunch Lotteries, or little celebrations with no formal approval needed. Recognition became a practice, not a program.
Here’s where the twist comes in.
A couple of month slate – At the next awards ceremony, the most prestigious recognition—“The Rising Star Award”—was given to Mansi. While she was getting up, she whispered, “So you guys nominated me?” We laughed—but in that moment, we realized recognition does not need grand gestures to create loyalty.
Imagine the magic if this creativity met today’s reward platforms…
Back then, we did not have apps or digital platforms with AI—just intention and care. Today, combining such creativity with technology could amplify connection, empathy, and belonging like never before.
Because in the end, recognition that touches the human soul—not just the job description—is what makes people stay, thrive, and proudly represent the culture they believe in.
Because at the end of the day, rewards are not about reaching the finish line. They are about cheering each other on when the road seems endless… and never forgetting who’s holding the map.
