Career cushioning is not a new phenomenon. Having worked in HR tech for more than a decade, I have seen how workplace culture can influence whether employees choose to stay or begin looking elsewhere. One reason employees begin preparing for other opportunities is a lack of recognition.
Our recent Annual Recognition and Rewards Report with Aon and the Society for Human Resource Management found that 92% of employees intend to stay in high-recognition cultures, compared with 76% in cultures where recognition is weaker. When employees feel valued, fairly rewarded, and confident about their future, staying becomes a genuine choice rather than simply the safest available option.
